This is a reconstruction of the Roman fort at Bar Hill along the Antonine Wall, and includes all of the elements that were thought to originally be on site. The fort platform, east gate, remains of the Principia and the bathhouse are the only surviving evidence today.

A huge variety of objects have been found at Bar Hill, making it possible to understand more about different aspects of life on the wall. It is unique along the Antonine Wall as it is not directly connected to the wall, set about 30m to the South with the military way running between the fort and the rampart of the wall.

Numerous objects were found thrown down the well located in the Principia (see annotation 3) probably at the time the fort was abandoned, including shoes, an alter, columns, wooden beams, bones, shells and coins.

Visit the Antonine Wall website to learn more about this Roman frontier. If you’re interested in visiting Bar Hill, go to our website.
