Beluga Sturgeon (NHMW-Zoo-FS 2012.IX.5)3D Model
3D scan of a taxidermized Beluga or European Sturgeon (Huso huso). The primeval bony fish was common in the Black See and migrated upstream every year to lay eggs. In the Danube River it was observed up to 2,500 kilometers upstream from the estuary; its main spawning ground was in Hungary. The female’s roe is very valuable and is seen as a delicacy. That is why wild populations have been greatly reduced due to overfishing.
This specimen can not be found in the exhibition of the NHM Vienna, but a very similar specimen of the Beluga Sturgeon is Number 63 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 25 of the NHM Vienna.
