Mono Lake Seismite

Disharmonically folded lacustrine beds of Mono Lake, interpreted as seismites. Intense ground shaking during an earthquake partially liquified the uppermost (not compacted) sediments, allowing them to fold in a chaotic fashion. Underlying lake beds were not affected due to their greater degree of compaction, and the undeformed overlying beds were deposited after the earthquake.
