More model information

This experimental model was produced using tectoplot (https://github.com/kyleedwardbradley/tectoplot). The data are the entire ComCat seismic catalog (USGS) and GMT 5 minute global relief. The surface of the globe is a downsampled mesh of the topographic relief. A black sphere is embedded below the deepest seismicity to block the view through to the far side of Earth; the shadows of the earthquake points fall onto this surface. Earthquakes are colored by depth, and earthquakes of magnitude 6+ are shown as colored icosahedra instead of points, and are scaled by magnitude. The shaded relief texture is rendered as a composite of slope and multiple hillshade using GDAL.

NOTE: The 3D model ouput functionality of tectoplot is experimental and has not yet been pushed to the Github repository.

tectoplot command used to produce this model:

tectoplot -r g -t 05m -t0 -z -makeply maxsize 300
