Tufa Spire at Mono Lake, CA

This tufa spire formed when fresh water draining from the Sierra Nevada emerged from an underwater spring and mixed with the alkaline water of Mono Lake. These spires are now exposed due to a significant drop in lake level. See http://www.monolake.org/about/geotufa for more information. The top part of this model is poorly resolved as the tufa tower is too tall to get downward looking pictures using a handheld camera!
