Stayed at the Rutland over the weekend but wanted simple but good pub grub with an atmosphere, the Red Lion hits the mark for the food and nice open fire where we met complete strangers and had a laugh. Food great and well priced, atmosphere could be better if staff behind the bar smiled a little.

I am staying in Bakewell for the weekend on a solo trip for the Monsal Trail 10km and a bit of walking and exploring. I was really warmly welcomed at The Red Lion for dinner. The service was friendly, the food was absolutely delicious - best chicken pie I have eaten in a very long time! I couldn’t fault a thing and am already planning my next visit! Thank you 🙏

We were looking for somewhere to eat in Bakewell without a booking and were warmly welcomed into the Red Lion. The bar staff were really friendly and made us feel right at home. We ordered the chicken and ham hock pie which was delicious and very satisfying. The service at the bar was excellent with helpful and cheerful staff. A big bonus is that it is dog friendly too. A lovely spot with great food and atmosphere.

We stayed here on a Thursday evening as we were eating elsewhere so I cannot comment on the food. Our room was very comfortable; yes it is small as is the ensuite shower room, but it was perfect for our needs. There is a rail to hang clothes, two chairs and a decent TV. The kettle is small and slow but there is a very good selection of teas and hot drinks with biscuits and also something for the morning too (cereal bars, instant porridge and juice cartons) as the pub doesn't provide a breakfast. This was a pleasant surprise and very welcome. |On returning to the pub after our meal ( 1010pm) we had to enter via the fire exit and a coded entry door. This may be tricky for less mobile guests. We were told about this in advance. | The only downside, and this isnt the pubs fault as it is located in the centre of a busy market town, is that we were woken up at 5am by a wagon emptying commercial bins directly outside our window. This happened again around 6am too so the town centre residents of Bakewell are clearly well served by an early bin collection! As I said the pub cant be faulted for this but future guests may need to bear this in mind if they stay on a Thursday night in room 2. |The staff we met were very pleasant and welcoming and we would recommend the Red Lion just maybe not at 5am on a Friday morning !

Looking for a nice place to have lunch in the quaint and narrow streets around the market, I decided to try this traditional former coaching inn. As I had expected to find in a 17th century pub, the two bar lounges and dining area are charming and olde-worlde, with original oak beams and fireplaces, and cosy nooks and crannies. There's also a pleasant little beer garden round the back. I sat in one of the bar lounges, which had a log fire and a comfortable leather banquette. The toilets are on the ground floor, a bit tight for space, but they were clean. Staff were friendly and hospitable, and in spite of it being market day and very busy, service was quick and efficient. There's a well stocked bar with a great selection of beers, wine and gin (and a few doggie treats for four-legged visitors!). I opted for a nice rose wine. The lunch menu offered a good choice of classic pub favourites, burgers, and vegan options. Ordered the handmade chicken and ham hock pie, with mash, peas, and a jug of gravy. The pie's pastry was too thick for my liking, but the meal as a whole was decent quality, well cooked and hot. Some lovely desserts for afters, but sadly I didn't have enough time to try one! The atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly, and overall I enjoyed a pleasant lunch experience. Would come again.

We were a party of 5 plus 3 dogs. It was for my friends birthdays (yes 2 were celebrating) back from a 6 mile walk and then to the red lion in bakewell. The food was absolutely amazing, we were all saying how lovely it was and also we provided a cake with sparklers which they bought out for us with 5 plates (which they didn’t have to do) thank you for the amazing service. They have a dog station for water and we were very well looked after.|Thank you from all of us xx

Been coming to Bakewell for a few years now and this is our second trip here this year but we have never eating at the Red Lion. My wife and I checked out the menu and were shocked by how average the prices were especially for the area! We had a sharing platter to begin with that was delicious, followed by mains where my wife had a pie and chips and I had half a roast chicken (which was incredible)….followed by sticky toffee pudding. The food was great and for two people and three courses it came to £75. Would highly recommend if your in the area as other pubs are below average.

The wife and I met up with some friends here and we had a great afternoon. The pub is fantastic, the staff were great. It really is a good pub. It has a lovely size beer garden in a fantastic location too. We never tried the food but the menu looked great.
